Evangelisch Freikirchliche Gemeinde Potsdam (Evangelical Free Church of Potsdam), Potsdam

The Evangelical Free Church of Potsdam (Evangelisch Freikirchliche Gemeinde Potsdam) is a significant Baptist congregation located near Potsdam's renowned Brandenburg Gate. With roots tracing back to the 19th century, the Baptist faith, although initially not widely recognized in Germany, gained prominence over time, particularly after the Prussian king met with Baptist leaders in 1854, which granted them equal status with other churches within the Evangelical Alliance.

Despite the early presence of Baptists in nearby Berlin, the Potsdam Baptist community only formally organized itself in 1910. The church's first parish hall was tragically destroyed during the bombings of April 14, 1945. However, through the determination of its members and a subsequent land exchange, the community constructed a new church between 1957 and 1960 on the ruins of a chapel from the Great Military Orphanage, which had also been destroyed during the war. The church further expanded its facilities in 1993 to accommodate its growing congregation.

Today, the Evangelical Free Church of Potsdam is a vibrant community of over 200 members. The congregation is united by their shared faith in Jesus Christ and is committed to sharing the good news of God with others. The church service, held every Sunday, is the cornerstone of community life, welcoming a diverse group of friends and guests. The services are characterized by a mix of traditional hymns accompanied by the organ and modern songs led by a band, reflecting the church's blend of old and new worship styles.

Sanssouci Park is a unique Potsdam landmark that occupies 290 hectares in the heart of the city. Laid out at the behest of Friedrich William II in 1787, Potsdam's Neuer Garten (New Garden) was indeed "new" compared to the already in place Sanssouci Park.

Between 1816 and 1828, the area was modified further as an English-style, open landscape garden, with an aim to reproduce nature – trees and plants were left to grow naturally, unshaped and untrimmed. Rural life was also...  view more
