Faro de Matamoros (Matamoros Lighthouse), Puerto Vallarta

The Matamoros Lighthouse is a historic landmark located along Matamoros Street in the heart of Puerto Vallarta’s Centro district. Built by Roberto Alcazar and inaugurated on August 15, 1932, the lighthouse served as a beacon for coastal navigation until its retirement in June 1978. Recognized for its historical value, the structure was preserved as a monument and, in 2006, remodeled into a scenic lookout with stair access, offering a fresh new role as one of the city’s charming tourist attractions.

Today, visitors to the Matamoros Lighthouse are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of Puerto Vallarta and the sparkling expanse of Banderas Bay. From the top, the colorful cityscape, the curve of the coastline, and the distant Sierra Madre mountains unfold in breathtaking fashion, making it a favorite spot for photography and quiet reflection. The viewpoint is especially enchanting at sunset, when warm hues paint the sky and water in vivid tones, casting a golden glow over the city below.

Beyond its spectacular vistas, the area around the lighthouse invites leisurely exploration, with nearby cafés, small shops, and quiet corners perfect for relaxing.
