First Baptist Church, Nashville

First Baptist Church, Nashville

The First Baptist Church in Nashville has a rich and significant history dating to its founding in 1820. Initially formed by thirty-five members from the Mill Creek Baptist Church, it was organized in the then Davidson County Courthouse. The church faced early challenges, including losing its first building on Spring Street (now Church Street) to followers of Alexander Campbell, who opposed traditional Baptist practices.

Despite these obstacles, the church persevered and built two more worship centers in the 19th century. The second building, completed in 1841 on Summer Street (now Fifth Avenue), and the third, a more expansive facility with Sunday School capabilities, was dedicated in 1886 at Broadway and Vine (now Seventh).

Throughout its history, First Baptist Church has been instrumental in various religious and community endeavors. It established a Sunday School in 1835, had a choir by 1842, and formed a significant and influential deacon body that included both men and women. The church was known for its strict discipline towards members who strayed from its teachings.

The church also played a vital role in organizing and conducting denominational agencies. Notably, in 1891, two significant organizations were founded within its walls: the Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Resources) and the Tennessee Baptist Children's Home. Additionally, the Baptist state newspaper originated from this church.

Moreover, First Baptist Church was proactive in licensing and ordaining numerous individuals to the ministry, reflecting its commitment to religious education and leadership. It initiated various ministries, including those focused on assisting prisoners and the poor, and established comprehensive missions programs catering to all age groups within the church.
