Fukuoka Castle, Fukuoka

Fukuoka Castle, Fukuoka (must see)

Fukuoka Castle, also known as Maizuru Castle, stands as a historical remnant of Japan’s feudal past in the heart of modern Fukuoka. Built in the early 17th century by Kuroda Nagamasa, a daimyo who played a key role in the Battle of Sekigahara, the castle once served as the political and military center of the Chikuzen domain. Though much of the original structure was dismantled during the Meiji era, the site still retains stone walls, gates, and turrets that offer a glimpse into the scale and sophistication of the original complex.

Set within Maizuru Park, the former castle grounds now provide a peaceful setting for both historical reflection and seasonal enjoyment. Visitors can explore walking paths that wind past crumbling ramparts, restored gates like the Tamon Yagura turret, and observation platforms with sweeping views of the city. Interpretive signs help provide context for the structures, and there is a small museum detailing the castle’s history and the legacy of the Kuroda clan.

Fukuoka Castle is especially popular in the spring, when cherry blossoms transform the park into one of the city’s best flower viewing spots. The contrast between the soft pink blooms and the weathered stone structures makes for striking photographs and a tranquil atmosphere. In autumn, changing leaves add another layer of beauty, making the park a popular year-round destination.

Though the castle no longer retains its main keep, the site has become an important cultural landmark. It offers visitors a space to experience the blend of nature, history, and urban life that defines much of Fukuoka. Free to access and close to central attractions, Fukuoka Castle is well worth a visit for those interested in Japan’s Edo-period heritage and scenic city views.
