Galeria de Carmen Montilla, Havana

The Galeria de Carmen Montilla is located in the heart of Havana's Historic Center. This old building, dating back to the 17th century, has a story of resilience and renewal. Despite being destroyed by fire at one point, it was carefully reconstructed and turned into an art gallery. From 1994 until her passing in 2004, it served as the private studio and home of Carmen Montilla Tinoco, a renowned Venezuelan painter. Montilla played a vital role in its restoration, leaving behind a legacy of artistic and cultural enrichment.

The Casa Estudio Carmen Montilla has three exhibition rooms dedicated to showcasing temporary exhibitions by Cuban and international artists, encouraging an exchange of artistic ideas. On the first floor, visitors can see a permanent collection of Montilla's paintings and works by notable Venezuelan artists, generously donated to the Historian's Office. These pieces represent Montilla's artistic heritage and the friendships she formed throughout her life.

Apart from being an exhibition space, the gallery is known for its beautiful interior patio. This charming courtyard, decorated with sculptures and featuring a large ceramic mural by Alfredo Sosabravo, displays a remarkable mastery of texture and form. The patio offers a peaceful environment for reflection and appreciation of the arts.

Montilla's artistic journey began with her studies at the School of Plastic Arts in Venezuela, leading to exhibitions of her work worldwide. With shows in countries like Japan, Spain, France, Egypt, East Germany, Switzerland, the United States, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Chile, and Cuba, Montilla gained international acclaim. Her contributions to the restoration of Havana's Historic Center highlight her enduring influence on the city's cultural scene.
