Galerija Skuc (art gallery), Ljubljana

Galerija ŠKUC is one of Slovenia’s longest-running centres for contemporary and experimental art. Founded within an independent cultural association established in the early 1970s, it became an important meeting place for artists, musicians, writers, and activists during the Yugoslav period. In the 1980s, the gallery supported radical movements such as Neue Slowenische Kunst and the painting collective IRWIN. It has also presented work linked with the OHO group, Marjetica Potrč, and other influential figures in Slovenian art.

The programme includes painting, photography, video, installation, performance, and socially engaged projects. Exhibitions explore social and political themes, with international artists including Ulay and Oliver Ressler. As a non-profit venue, the gallery has also used unusual art-fair displays to question the relationship between artworks, audiences, and the commercial market.

The wider organisation has played an important role in LGBTQ+ culture and activism. It helped establish some of the first organised gay and lesbian groups in Yugoslavia and published early feminist and queer magazines such as Revolver, Lesbo, and Pandora. It is also connected with the Ljubljana LGBT Film Festival, founded in 1984 and regarded as Europe’s oldest continuously operating LGBTQ+ film festival.
