Sentflorjanska Cerkev (Saint Florian's Church), Ljubljana

Šentflorjanska cerkev (St. Florian’s Church) was built between 1672 and 1696 after the destructive fire of 1660. Dedicated to St. Florian, patron saint of firefighters, it later became a pilgrimage site connected with a 1693 painting of Our Lady of Sorrows. Local tradition claimed that people were healed of blindness after praying before the image. The church burned in 1774 and was later rebuilt.

Its present appearance largely reflects Jože Plečnik’s redesign of 1933–1934. He moved the entrance to the side façade and sealed the original doorway, placing a 1727 statue of St. John Nepomuk by Francesco Robba in the former entrance niche. The sculpture had originally stood near a bridge chapel in Črnuče. Plečnik also designed the surrounding landscaped area, the route toward the castle, and a distinctive eternal-light lamp inside the church. The small interior remains simpler and more restrained than many nearby Baroque churches.

Poet, journalist, and priest Valentin Vodnik served here between 1796 and 1798. The church also has a literary connection through Ivan Cankar’s satirical “St. Florian’s Valley,” a phrase still used to describe narrow-minded or hypocritical social surroundings. Since 2012, the Catholic church has also hosted services for the Macedonian Orthodox community dedicated to St. Clement of Ohrid.
