Mestni muzej Ljubljana (City Museum of Ljubljana), Ljubljana
Mestni muzej Ljubljana (City Museum of Ljubljana) explores more than 2,000 years of local history, from the earliest prehistoric settlements to the present day. The museum occupies Auersperg Palace, built above remains of Roman Emona. Founded in 1935, the museum preserves extensive historical collections and Roman remains beneath the palace.
The permanent exhibition traces different historical periods through original artefacts, multimedia displays, Roman inscriptions, medieval objects, maps, clothing, and household items. Among the museum's most significant treasures is the world's oldest known wooden wheel with an axle, discovered in the nearby Ljubljana Marshes and dating back more than 5,000 years. Temporary exhibitions regularly explore archaeology, art, architecture, and contemporary social themes.
The museum also organises guided tours, family activities, educational workshops, lectures, and cultural events throughout the year. Its combination of archaeological discoveries, historical collections, and interactive presentations offers an engaging introduction to the city's past while revealing how different cultures and historical events have shaped life in this part of Slovenia over thousands of years.
