Gebroeders Maris, Hague

Gebroeders Maris, Hague

Gebroeders Maris is a notable monument in The Hague erected as a tribute to the Maris brothers for their significant contributions to Dutch art and culture. The monument stands as a testament to their artistic legacy within the context of The Hague School, a prominent artistic movement in the late 19th century.

The Maris brothers, Jacob, Matthijs, and Willem, were integral members of The Hague School, each with their distinctive styles and artistic focus. Jacob Maris gained recognition for his skillful depictions of landscapes and towns, capturing the beauty of Dutch scenery. On the other hand, Matthijs Maris was celebrated for his creative and innovative approach to art, displaying a unique flair in his works. Willem Maris, in contrast, achieved acclaim for his paintings featuring cows and ducks, which became his trademark subjects.

The monument, known as the 'Monument to the Maris Brothers,' was crafted by Charles van Wijk, an artist with a deep affinity for portraying the lives of working people in his sculptures. Although Van Wijk was known for his representations of laborers and fishermen, the Maris monument takes on a more classical and subdued form.

At the pinnacle of the sculpture, two round bronze portrait reliefs of Jacob Maris (1837-1899) and Willem Maris (1844-1910) are prominently displayed, paying homage to their artistic achievements. It's important to note that Charles van Wijk had a personal connection to the Maris family, as he was married to Anna Maris, the daughter of Jacob Maris.

A unique feature of the monument is the presence of a half-naked woman located at the bottom, midway up a few steps. With her arm raised, she has inscribed a meaningful text beneath the two portraits, which reads: 'Artists worthy of the land of Rembrandt.' This inscription underscores the significance of the Maris brothers' contributions to Dutch art and their place among the illustrious artists of the Netherlands.
