Grandel Theater, Saint Louis

Grandel Theater, Saint Louis

The Grandel is a historic performing arts venue that traces its origins to 1884, when the building was constructed as the First Congregational Church. Designed by architect Lewis Frederick Rice, the structure combines Romanesque Revival design with Gothic Revival elements. After serving as a place of worship for decades, the building was adapted as a theater in 1992 and became the longtime home of The Black Rep. A major renovation by the Kranzberg Arts Foundation led to its reopening as The Grandel in 2017, preserving its historic character while creating a modern center for the performing arts.

Many original architectural features remain, including the heavy stone exterior, rounded arches, stained-glass windows, exposed timber roof structure, and decorative woodwork. The former sanctuary has been transformed into a modern theater with a standard seated capacity of 454 people, which can be expanded to accommodate larger audiences for certain event configurations. The venue hosts concerts, dramatic productions, dance performances, lectures, film screenings, and multidisciplinary arts events. The 2017 redevelopment also introduced The Dark Room at The Grandel, a street-level jazz lounge, restaurant, and photography gallery that complements the main performance space.

Today, The Grandel serves as a cultural venue within the Grand Center Arts District. Its year-round program includes live theater, jazz, classical and contemporary music, dance performances, festivals, educational activities, and community gatherings. By combining historic preservation with modern performance facilities, the venue continues to support both established and emerging artists while introducing visitors to the building's architectural heritage and its continuing role in the region's cultural life.
