Third Baptist Church, Saint Louis

Third Baptist Church is one of the oldest Baptist congregations in St. Louis, founded in 1850. Over the decades, it grew into a major center for religious life, education, and community leadership, becoming one of the largest Protestant congregations in Missouri.

The church relocated to its present home in 1885 and today is known as a multicultural, racially diverse, and inclusive congregation that welcomes worshippers from many backgrounds. The church building is a notable example of Streamlined Gothic architecture with Art Deco influences. Its distinctive façade is clad in smooth, light-colored limestone, the result of a modernization designed by architect Louis Baylor Pendleton in 1950 and completed in 1951, which enclosed the original structure. Deep arched entrances and a landmark vertical neon sign define the exterior, while the spacious sanctuary preserves its late-19th-century dark woodwork, historic furnishings, and stained-glass windows that fill the interior with natural light.

Beyond regular worship services, Third Baptist Church has a long tradition of charitable outreach, social justice initiatives, and community service under its guiding motto, "In the City for Good." The church operates a community food pantry, hosts educational programs, and supports local families and youth throughout the year. Its combination of distinctive architecture, historic legacy, and ongoing commitment to public service offers visitors an opportunity to learn about an important part of the city's religious and cultural history.
