Saint Louis University is a private Jesuit research university founded in 1818, making it the oldest university west of the Mississippi River and the second-oldest Jesuit university in the United States. Established as Saint Louis Academy by Bishop Louis William Valentine DuBourg, the institution came under the direction of the Society of Jesus in 1827 and has grown into a major center for higher education, research, and healthcare. In addition to its main campus, the university also operates a degree-granting campus in Madrid, Spain, giving it a strong international presence.
