St. Alphonsus Liguori "Rock" Church, Saint Louis

St. Alphonsus Liguori "Rock" Church, Saint Louis

St. Alphonsus Liguori "Rock" Church is a historic Roman Catholic church established by the Redemptorist Fathers at the invitation of Archbishop Peter Richard Kenrick. Construction began in 1867, and the church was formally dedicated in 1872. Its well-known nickname, "Rock Church," comes from the heavy, rough-hewn local limestone used in its construction, giving the building its distinctive appearance and lasting durability.

Today, it is recognized as one of the finest examples of English Gothic Revival architecture in the Midwest. The church was designed by Redemptorist priest Rev. Louis Dold, with construction overseen by architects Thomas Waryng Walsh and James Smith. A 237-foot central spire, completed in 1893, dominates the exterior, while the interior features pointed arches, ribbed vaults, richly decorated altars, and stained-glass windows created by Mayer & Company of Munich in 1904. The church also houses the historic 1934 Wicks pipe organ (Opus 1228), admired for its Anglo-American symphonic sound and English-style pipework. In recognition of its architectural and historical importance, the church was designated a St. Louis City Landmark in 1976.

Despite challenges such as a lightning strike and five-alarm fire in 2007, followed by a careful restoration, the church remains an active place of worship. It also played an important role in local social history, officially desegregating its seating in 1941 and later becoming a center of the city's African American Catholic community, known for its gospel music tradition. Alongside regular Masses, the church hosts guided tours, concerts, and community programs, offering visitors an opportunity to explore its architecture, history, and religious heritage.
