Saint Joseph Cathedral, Hanoi

Saint Joseph’s Cathedral in Hanoi serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hanoi. Completed in 1886 during French colonial rule, it is the oldest church in the Vietnamese capital. Locally known as the “Big Church,” the cathedral stands on Nha Chung Street, close to Hoan Kiem Lake.

The site has a much longer history. The cathedral was built on the grounds once occupied by Bao Thien Pagoda, an important Buddhist temple established during the Ly Dynasty in the 11th century and once a prominent place of worship in the city.

Saint Joseph’s Cathedral was inaugurated at Christmas in 1886 and was designed in the Neo-Gothic style, with architectural elements reminiscent of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Its imposing façade is dominated by two square bell towers, pointed arches and tall windows. Inside, colourful stained-glass windows filter light into the nave, while soaring arches and religious decoration contribute to the solemn atmosphere.

In the square in front of the cathedral stands a statue of the Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, surrounded by greenery. Step inside the cathedral to admire its elegant interior, where European Gothic influences are combined with decorative elements reflecting local traditions.

The cathedral remains an active place of worship, with Mass celebrated regularly, particularly drawing large congregations on Sundays and major religious holidays. At the same time, it is one of central Hanoi’s most recognisable landmarks, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the city’s religious heritage and French colonial history.
