Holtenauer Strasse (Holtenau Street), Kiel
Can shops count as attractions? When you have Kiel's wild selection, then yes! If your credit card is itching in your pocket, calling to you, then just head out to either Holstenstraße or the long, long Holtenauer Straße. Here you will find shop after shop after shop after shop after shop after shop after shop after shop after… You get the idea.
A very special corner that invites you to browse and shop is Holtenauer Straße . Here, souvenir shops, fashion stores, bakeries and market shops as well as cafes and retailers line up next to one another. The resulting hustle and bustle invites you to stroll through the street. If you need a break, you will always find an opportunity to spend it with a currywurst, a fresh coffee or a delicious piece of cake. Feel free to stop by our district management and find out about future projects in this special district center. The famous White Night takes place in August. There are also Sundays when shops are open and markets for sale. The sense of community among the owners is clearly noticeable: if you can't find something in a shop, the owners will be happy to give you a tip about where you might find it elsewhere. Holtenauer stands for flair and trend, for atmosphere and good food and welcomes you to indulge in the relaxed spirit of this street. Affectionately referred to by residents as the "It Street", here you will find mainly individual, owner-operated shops that offer magical little things, Kiel souvenirs and maritime fashion. Here, in the "Holti", you will look in vain for chain stores, but you will discover many shops with northern German charm.
As early as 1286, a document by Count Johann II mentions a country road called "Via danica", which was used as a trade route in the city founded a few decades earlier. However, Holtenauer Straße did not receive its name until 1869 - after all, it was the shortest connection between Brunswiker Straße and the Holtenau district. Little by little, it developed into a busy lifeline in Kiel, where more and more people settled. With the founding of our association "Die Holtenauer eV" in 1972, the promenade has become a brand in the best sense of the word, making the entire district even more livable for you.: The more than 150 participating shops, service providers and restaurants work closely together to achieve this. Strolling and shopping on our approximately 1500 meters is becoming more and more attractive and varied. This includes regular events such as the "White Night" with opening times until 10 p.m., a small, fine Christmas market and changing events from the areas of culture, fashion, cuisine and more. Holtenauer is constantly evolving - and our association is a good reason for this. Since 1972 we have been part of the changes - or we preserve what needs to be protected. Important topics such as sustainability have been part of our statutes from the very beginning and determine the direction of our joint work; for example with the Zero Waste Picnic. This is how our street has become as unique and diverse as it is today. That's why we like to look back on every single event with you!
