Howard Gardens, Mdina

Howard Gardens takes its name from Joseph Howard, Malta’s first Prime Minister, and was formally inaugurated in 1942.

Situated between the historic towns of Mdina and Rabat, the gardens form a pleasant green space separating the two. Their convenient location makes them an easy stop while exploring the area, with several important historical attractions nearby, including the remains of a Roman townhouse.

Upon entering Howard Gardens, visitors are greeted by an orchard filled with orange trees, which add both colour and fragrance to the surroundings. The gardens also include recreational facilities such as a football ground and a tennis court.

A variety of trees, shrubs and other vegetation creates a lush setting for a leisurely stroll. Pathways wind through different sections of the gardens, offering peaceful corners and attractive views along the way.

Howard Gardens are particularly welcome after a day spent exploring the narrow streets and historic sights of Mdina and Rabat. Benches scattered throughout the grounds provide plenty of opportunities to sit in the shade, relax and enjoy the greenery away from the busier tourist areas.

One of the gardens’ greatest attractions is the impressive view of the Mdina bastions, whose massive stone fortifications rise dramatically above the surrounding greenery. This combination of natural scenery and historic architecture makes Howard Gardens an excellent place to pause and admire the fortified city from a different perspective.
