Hưng Tổ Miếu (Temple of the Resurrection), Hue

The Temple of the Resurrection is one of the ancestral temples of the Nguyen dynasty within Hue’s Imperial City. Built in 1804 under Emperor Gia Long, it was dedicated to Nguyen Phuc Luan, the emperor’s father, who was posthumously honored as Emperor Hung To. Located in the southwestern section of the Imperial City, the temple holds both religious and dynastic significance as a place devoted to ancestor worship and the commemoration of the Nguyen imperial lineage.

The temple underwent renovations and alterations during later reigns while retaining the traditional principles of symmetry, hierarchy, and reverence that characterized Nguyen religious architecture. A paved courtyard leads to the timber-framed main hall, decorated with wooden elements, lacquered details, and ceremonial furnishings associated with ancestral worship. Surrounding structures and gates contribute to the temple’s secluded and solemn atmosphere. Like many buildings within the Imperial City, it suffered destruction during the conflicts of the 20th century and was subsequently reconstructed as part of efforts to preserve Hue’s imperial heritage.

Today, the Temple of the Resurrection offers visitors an opportunity to explore the spiritual and dynastic traditions of Vietnam’s last imperial family. Its peaceful setting, away from the busiest parts of the complex, encourages reflection on the importance of ancestor worship, filial piety, and dynastic continuity within the Nguyen court.
