Iglesia del Sagrado Corazon (Church of the Sacred Heart), Cordoba
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus belongs to the Franciscan Order. It was named the First Artificial Wonder of the City. Construction began in 1926 and finished in 1934, making it the first Argentine church built with reinforced concrete.
Architect Augusto Ferrari designed the church in a neo-Gothic style he learned in Europe. The entrance features statues of Moses and John the Baptist. The right side has a truncated tower representing the dying matter, while the 70-meter tower on the other side symbolizes the soul's ascent. The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is notable for its numerous sculptures and paintings. The ceiling, adorned with vaults decorated by various artists, features golden stars representing Córdoba's night sky throughout the year.
The church also houses artworks depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. Ferrari designed the columns in various styles, representing different pre-Christian cultures. At the center of the cornice, marking the façade's beginning, there's a stained glass window and a sculpture of Saint Francis of Assisi gazing skyward with crossed hands.
The church's construction started in 1926, and while it was inaugurated in 1933, it wasn't fully completed until 1980. The building underwent restoration in 2016 and 2017. The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus serves as a metaphor for human existence and its relationship with God, combining Gothic and Romanesque elements. Its towering structures symbolically elevate its figures closer to heaven.
The original name, Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus ties into the devotion to Jesus' physical heart, a symbol of divine love and dedication. The truncated tower on the right represents dying matter, while the 53-meter tower on the left symbolizes the soul's ascent. Beyond its symbolism, the church is distinguished by its many sculptures and paintings.
