Museo de Ciencias Naturales (Natural Sciences Museum), Cordoba

Museo de Ciencias Naturales, officially named after Dr. Arturo Umberto Illia, presents the natural history of the region through fossils, minerals, taxidermy specimens, reconstructions, and educational displays. The building is part of the visit. Locals call its spiral layout a caracol, or snail shell, because a continuous ramp guides visitors through Earth’s history. The design also improves access, with ramped circulation and tactile floor guidance.

Paleontology is one of the museum’s strongest sections. Visitors can see material linked to ancient South American animals, including a Megatherium, or giant ground sloth, from the Sierras Grandes. Its fossil remains show signs of severe arthritis, revealing details about the life of this giant animal. Glyptodon replicas recall the armored mammals once common in the region, while suspended pterosaurs show South America’s ancient flying reptiles.

The geology and space-related displays add another layer to the visit, with rocks, minerals, and real meteorite fragments that fell on Argentine soil. These displays connect local geology with wider planetary history, including meteorite impacts. The museum is also part of the Media Legua de Oro Cultural, a route linking museums, theatres, and art spaces.
