Caraffa Fine Arts Museum, Cordoba (must see)
The Caraffa Fine Arts Museum is one of the main art institutions in the region, focused on modern, contemporary, and provincial visual art. It opened in 1916 as the Provincial Fine Arts Museum, at first occupying only a small area with one exhibition room known as the Kronfuss Salon. The institution was renamed in 1950 in honor of Emilio Caraffa, a painter, teacher, and cultural organizer who also worked on the painted ceilings of the Cathedral in 1914.
The building’s history reflects several stages of growth. Its original section was designed by Juan Kronfuss, while later expansions changed the museum from a compact early 20th-century space into a much larger cultural complex. In 2007, the museum expanded by joining with the former Institute for Physical Education, growing from about 1,200 to 4,400 square meters. The renovation added new galleries and a cantilevered foyer, linking the older building with contemporary design.
Inside, the museum presents temporary exhibitions alongside works from its collection. Its collection includes works by Argentine artists such as Emilio Pettoruti, Lino Enea Spilimbergo, Fernando Fader, and Emilio Caraffa, along with pieces linked to Pablo Picasso and Francisco Goya. Exhibitions may include painting, sculpture, photography, video, and mixed-media works.
For tourists, the museum is a useful stop for understanding the area’s artistic life beyond its colonial buildings and historic churches. Its rooms can be visited at a relaxed pace, and the changing program means the experience may differ from one visit to another. Admission is often economical, and tickets may be combined with nearby museums such as the Evita Fine Arts Museum and the Palacio Dionisi Photography Museum, making it easy to explore several cultural spaces in one outing.
