Igreja Matriz de Sao Jose (Parish Church of Saint Joseph), Recife
The Igreja Matriz de São José began construction in 1845 and developed over several decades as the surrounding district expanded. It was built to serve a growing population of traders and workers, reflecting the social structure of the area. Dedicated to Saint Joseph, regarded as the patron of laborers, the church became an important religious center closely connected to daily life and local occupations.
Its architecture follows a Neoclassical style, differing from the earlier Baroque tradition common in the region. The façade features two towers and balanced proportions with limited decoration. A ceramic tile mural by Francisco Brennand, added in 1964, introduces a modern element. Inside, the church has a central nave with side aisles and was the first in the area to receive electric lighting.
After being closed for 12 years due to structural risks, including termite infestations and a roof collapse, the church reopened in December 2022 following restoration work. The project, funded by Moura Dubeux, included a complete replacement of the roof. The building continues to function as an active place of worship, maintaining its role within the surrounding community.
