Torres Gemeas (Twin Towers), Recife
Torres Gêmeas, or the Twin Towers, is the popular name for two high-rise residential buildings officially known as Píer Maurício de Nassau and Píer Duarte Coelho. Built between 2005 and 2009, the towers quickly became dominant features of the skyline. They rise to roughly 131 metres and are generally described as having around 42 floors, though figures may vary slightly depending on the source.
Visually, the towers mark a clear shift toward modern high-rise development. Their façades combine glass, concrete, steel, and polished finishes, creating a reflective appearance that contrasts with the older port-related and historic surroundings. Built on the historically sensitive Cais de Santa Rita, the towers sparked debate over heritage, planning, and real estate pressure. In 2005, the Federal Public Ministry filed a lawsuit, citing their scale and impact on views of São José Market and nearby colonial structures.
The towers are also tied to a painful chapter in Brazilian national memory. On June 2, 2020, 5-year-old Miguel Otávio Santana da Silva died after falling from the 9th floor of Píer Maurício de Nassau, after his mother, a domestic worker, had left him in her employer’s care. Sarí Corte Real was later convicted of abandonment of a vulnerable person resulting in death; her original sentence of 8 years and 6 months was reduced to 7 years, and in 2025 the Pernambuco Court of Justice upheld that conviction while the case remained subject to further appeal.
