Insurance Exchange Building, Long Beach

Insurance Exchange Building, Long Beach

The Insurance Exchange Building is an example of early 20th-century architecture and a key piece of the city’s history. Originally opened in 1925 as Middough’s Boy’s Shop, the eight-story structure quickly became one of the largest office buildings in the area.

The building blends early 20th-century elegance with later decorative updates. Its original design includes terra cotta surfaces, colorful floral details, and sculpted griffins that add a touch of character. Art Deco accents were later introduced in the main entrance and foyer.

Once home to the Superior Court on its upper floors, the structure was recognized for its historic value and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

In more recent years, the Insurance Exchange Building has been thoughtfully integrated into downtown Long Beach’s redevelopment, especially as part of The Promenade revitalization. Restored in 2007, the building preserved its historic character while welcoming new life through the addition of a nightclub and a Jamaican restaurant.
