Islamic Council Building, George Town

Constructed in 1907, the Islamic Council Building stands as a remarkable example of Neo-Classical architecture on Beach Street. Originally part of a larger U-shaped complex housing the administrative offices of the Straits Settlements government, this double-storey structure retained its grandeur despite the destruction wrought by the Japanese invasion during the Second World War.

With its ornate detailing, the building's design reflects the architectural elegance of the Edwardian era. The roof balcony, charming round windows, and serene light blue exterior serve as enduring reminders of colonial architectural excellence in the Straits Settlements.

Today, the building serves as the headquarters of the Penang Islamic Council, an agency of the Penang state government responsible for matters of Islamic jurisprudence within the state.
