Immigration Department Building, George Town
Situated on Beach Street within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town, the Immigration Department Building stands as a colonial-era structure comprising two stories. Originally erected in 1890 to accommodate the police force, it was an integral part of the neighboring State Assembly Building. Today, it serves as the Penang Island branch of the Malaysian Immigration Department, facilitating passport applications and renewals for local residents.
Adorned with architectural details characteristic of its time, the building features a coach gate, or "porte-cochère," facing north. Its ground floor is marked by artificial rustification, with keystones at the arches, while the upper level showcases a molded cornice accentuating a blustered parapet.
