J & L Lobmeyr, one of the oldest shops in Vienna, offers exquisite crystal and porcelain. The building houses a museum on the third floor that is dedicated solely to crystal and porcelain goods. Glass has always facsinated with its transparancy and sheen, and its ability to reflect light in a way that only diamond and mountain crystal can. Techniques for glass making have existed for centuries. A family business grounded in 1823 which has existed in Vienna for six generations, J. L. Lobmeyr can be identified by way of working through the love of material, emotional response to the product and personal energy. Notable moments in the history of the brand include creating the chandeliers for the Vienna state opera and co-founding the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna. Many fantastic designers have worked for Lobmeyr, including many painters, architects and designers. Nowadays it is possible to find all sorts of one of a kind and limited edition, lighting, crystal, and jewelry items from Lobmeyr, including drinking sets, vases, paperweights and tumblers.
