Kanazawa Bunko Museum, Yokohama

The Kanazawa Bunko Museum, situated in Kanazawa Ward, Yokohama, is a place dedicated to traditional Japanese and Chinese art, particularly focusing on items from the Kamakura period. It was initially founded as a private library by Hōjō Sanetoki in 1275. Over time, it has become one of the main cultural and educational hubs of medieval Japan, along with another significant institution.

While the original collection of the library hasn't entirely survived, some invaluable documents have been preserved and are now housed in a modern facility constructed in 1990. This new building safeguards the historical treasures once gathered by Sanetoki and his successors.

The museum's vast collection includes various paintings, such as portraits of warriors from the Kanazawa Hojo clan, tracing the lineage of Sanetoki, Akitoki, Sadaaki, and Sadamasa. There are also Buddhist sculptures inspired by the Hojo warriors, reflecting the fusion of art, religion, and history. One remarkable exhibit is the crystal Gyoku-kemam, a Buddhist ritual ornament adorned with beads, considered an Important Cultural Property and the only one of its kind in Japan.

In addition to these artifacts, the museum boasts a large library containing around 13,000 books and ancient documents covering diverse subjects like history, politics, literature, and religion. Notably, the collection includes 4,000 letters written by members of the Hojo clan and monks from Shomyo-ji Temple, offering insights into daily life and societal dynamics during the Kamakura Era.

Through research, educational programs, lectures, and initiatives for public access, the museum aims to impart the profound legacy of this significant era in Japanese history to future generations, ensuring that the wisdom, art, and culture of the past continue to enlighten and inspire.
