Shomyoji Temple, Yokohama

Shomyoji Temple, Yokohama

Shomyoji Temple, situated in Kanagawa Bunko near Sea Paradise and just a 20-minute train ride from Yokohama Station, holds significant historical and cultural value. Recognized as a National Treasure since 1922, it stands as a testament to Japan's rich heritage. Established in 1258 as the family temple of the Kanazawa Hojo clan, Shomyoji allows visitors to immerse themselves in the past amidst peaceful natural surroundings.

Upon entering the temple complex, visitors are greeted by the striking Akamon, the main gate, leading to a serene walkway towards the temple grounds. This path, particularly beautiful during spring with its cherry blossoms, offers a stunning view. Further inside, the second gate houses the guardian gods Niomon and Niozo, installed in 1267, symbolizing protection of the sacred space.

One of the most captivating features of the temple is the Jodoshiki Teien (Pure Land Garden), distinguished by its bright red bridges spanning the tranquil Ajigaike Pond. These bridges, including the Nakanoshima-arched bridge and its flat counterpart, represent the journey towards peace, a recurring theme throughout the temple grounds. The garden changes with the seasons, from yellow irises in early summer to vibrant fall colors, creating an ever-evolving spectacle.

Notable structures within the temple grounds include the Kondoh, the main hall, Shakkado, and the Bonsho Temple Bell, recast in 1301 to honor Hojo Sanetoki’s father. Visitors can also explore the Kanagawa Bunko Museum via a tunnel to the left of the garden, housing national treasures and teachings from the temple, although it is currently undergoing restoration.

Shomyoji Temple is not only a place of tranquility and beauty but also a cultural center. In May, traditional NOH theater performances bring the temple grounds to life, offering a unique nighttime experience. Beyond the temple gardens, steps lead to a historic cemetery and pathways to the peaks of Mt. Hinata and Mt. Inari, rewarding adventurous souls with panoramic views of Yokohama and a peaceful resting spot.
