Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Yokohama

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Yokohama

Tsurugaoka Hachimangū is Kamakura’s most important Shinto shrine. Dedicated to Hachiman, the guardian deity of warriors and patron god of the Minamoto clan, its origins date to 1063, when it was established near the coast. In 1191, Minamoto no Yoritomo, founder of the Kamakura shogunate, moved it to its present location and transformed it into the religious centre of his new military capital.

Visitors approach the shrine along Wakamiya Ōji, a broad ceremonial avenue leading to an expansive complex of torii gates, bridges, ponds, gardens, and sub-shrines. Once you reach the lower central courtyard, you will be greeted by the Maiden Dance Stage. This open-air red wooden pavilion is beautifully maintained for modern sacred rituals. With no solid outer walls, it reflects the openness of performances traditionally offered before the gods, and it remains associated with the tragic samurai-era dances commemorated here today.

Next, continue past the pavilion toward the base of the massive stone staircase. Directly to the left of the steps are the remains and young shoots of a legendary ginkgo tree that witnessed the dramatic 1219 assassination of the shogun Minamoto no Sanetomo, an event that brought an end to the direct Minamoto line. The ancient giant was uprooted during a severe winter storm in 2010, but rather than clearing the remains, the original stump was preserved and cuttings were planted, allowing visitors to see new life emerging from the tree’s historic root system.

For the final highlight, climb the wide staircase past the ginkgo tree to reach the upper sanctuary platform and the Hongū Main Shrine Gate. Look straight ahead to see this grand, vividly painted vermilion structure, elaborately decorated with gold details and dynamic guardian carvings. The gateway frames the entrance to the inner sanctuary and offers an exceptionally clear, memorable view along the city’s ceremonial axis down toward the coastline.
