Karachi Zoological Gardens, Karachi (must see)

Karachi Zoological Gardens, commonly known as Karachi Zoo, is the second-oldest zoo in Pakistan and one of the city's longest-established public attractions. Its origins date back to the late 19th century, opening officially to the public in 1878. During its early history, the site evolved from a government garden into a major public space commonly referred to as Gandhi Garden.

Following the creation of Pakistan, it became officially known as the Karachi Zoological Gardens, continuing to operate under the management of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC). Covering approximately 33 to 43 acres, the zoo has welcomed generations of visitors while serving as a major city landmark. The zoo is home to a diverse collection of mammals, birds, and reptiles, including lions, white tigers, zebras, deer, monkeys, crocodiles, and parrots. In addition to animal enclosures, the grounds feature historic Banyan trees, landscaped Mughal-style gardens, an aquarium, the Karachi Zoo Museum with natural history exhibits, and a dedicated Reptile House. Open green spaces make the zoo a popular location for family weekend outings in an outdoor setting.

Beyond its role as a recreational attraction, Karachi Zoological Gardens has contributed to public education about biodiversity and environmental awareness. The facility hosts regular educational excursions for school groups. In recent years, the KMC has launched major infrastructure updates and habitat renovations to enhance animal welfare and modernize the historic facility. Today it continues to welcome families, students, and visitors seeking opportunities to observe animals and explore its gardens, museum, aquarium, and educational exhibits year-round.
