Nishtar Park, Karachi

Nishtar Park is a long-established public ground used for religious, political, and civic gatherings. Formerly known as Patel Park, it was renamed in 1965 in memory of Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar, a leader of the Pakistan Movement, Pakistan’s first Minister of Communications, and the second Governor of West Punjab.

For decades, its open grounds have accommodated political meetings, religious congregations, public speeches, community activities, and other large events. The park consists primarily of an open gathering area, with sections of grass, trees, a jogging track, and basic recreational facilities introduced through restoration projects. Rather than functioning mainly as an ornamental garden, it is known for its capacity to accommodate large crowds. Rehabilitation efforts have included tree planting, new grass, lighting, swings, and improvements to the jogging track. Its surroundings include several institutions and places of worship, connecting the grounds with an older urban area. Nishtar Park has hosted major political rallies, including speeches by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and remains associated with Muharram gatherings and other religious observances. The park is also remembered as the site of the April 11, 2006 bombing, which struck a gathering marking the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, killing at least 49 people and injuring around 100 others.

The tragedy remains an important part of the site’s recent history. When large events are not taking place, the grounds may be used for walking and informal recreation. Access, security arrangements, and conditions can vary considerably when political rallies, religious ceremonies, or other major public gatherings are scheduled.
