Kiellinie (Kiel Promenade), Kiel
The Kiellinie is a promenade in the Kiel districts of Düsternbrook and Wik. The Kiellinie begins at the Seeburg behind the Ostseekai. It is lined on the land side by a row of boathouses belonging to rowing clubs, canoeists and sailors, the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. The waterfront promenade is particularly popular with locals and guests because of the hustle and bustle, especially during Kiel Week, the unobstructed view of incoming cruise ships and the very good view of the eastern shore with the shipyards of the German Naval Yards and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the former Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft, and their large gantry cranes, which are considered Kiel's landmark. As part of the Kiel Fjord, the Kiellinie is well protected. However, depending on the weather conditions, the Baltic Sea can be brisk – to the point where the Kiellinie is closed due to flooding – or it can experience low water, which is actually atypical for the Baltic Sea. During the Kiel Week in June of each year, the Kiellinie became the play line for many years, as the animation programs for children were concentrated here. The Kiellinie has borne its name along its entire length since 2014. It has existed in its current length since 1969. Before that, sections were always missing, and the most recent section to be built was the area south of Reventlouallee/Reventlou Bridge.
The Kiellinie is Kiel's promenade - especially in summer. Residents and guests, dog owners, walkers, cyclists, joggers, families... simply everyone who wants to enjoy the fjord panorama meet here. The Kiellinie is the center of Kiel's west bank. The best place to admire the really big ships, the cruise ships, is from the highest point of the Schloßgarten Bridge. At the Ostseekai, the ships can switch off their engines in order to use the shore power system to avoid air pollutants and noise emissions while docked. In addition to its ecological benefits, the Ostseekai is also a visual highlight. Thanks to 12,000 LED lights, the facade shines in ever-changing designs in the dark, and has won the German Lighting Design Award. The Fördeblick Park offers another viewing platform from which you have the best view of the shipyard cranes typical of Kiel and passing ships. At the marina you get a first impression of the hustle and bustle on the fjord with the sailors, cruise ships and water sports enthusiasts. The seal pool is also worth a stop, where you can watch the seals playing and eating directly from the keel line. The small aquarium offers an entertaining opportunity to learn about the underwater world. Just a few hundred meters from the marina, you have the opportunity to take a culinary break. Handmade ice cream with a view of the fjord and the passing ships or a portion of hot chips with delicious toppings - what would you like? Would you like to enjoy not only panoramic views but also culinary delights? Then two high-class restaurants invite you to stop by. At Lagom and Flygge you can enjoy high-quality, creatively prepared dishes. But there is also enough choice for those on a tight budget. In addition to various food trucks, the fish stall MOBY, known for its fish sandwiches, is located on the Kiellinie. The offering is complemented by restaurants such as Gosch, Nordwind and Cortidiano. The Seebar Düsternbrook is popular among Kiel residents. Here you can drink cocktails during the "blue hour", rent a SUP or treat yourself to a salty refreshment. After a refreshment, you can watch various water sports enthusiasts or get active yourself. Many water sports clubs have settled here: from water polo and SUP to rowing and sailing, you can let off steam in a maritime way on the Kiellinie. Sailing enthusiasts of all ages will get their money's worth at the sailing camp. Exciting courses and a varied supporting program await you. Would you rather jump straight into the water? There are many ways to enjoy the cool water at the Kiellinie. The Kiellinie bathing area is located right next to the sailing camp. Just a few hundred meters away, another access to the water awaits you - the Bellevue bathing area. Both bathing areas have sanitary facilities, changing rooms and are free of charge. From the west bank, you can explore the fjord quickly and easily by ferry. You start at the Reventlou Bridge pier and dock at various stations - both on the west and east bank. The timetables differ in winter and summer timetables. A discovery tour across the fjord should definitely be on your to-do list! Not far from the Reventlou Bridge you will find the Blücher Bridge. For visitors it is primarily known as a culinary destination. Here you can find everything your heart desires. Enjoy! ***PH***
