King's College Chapel, Cambridge (must see)

King’s College Chapel is one of Cambridge’s great landmarks, rising beside King’s Parade and dominating the skyline with its tall Perpendicular Gothic windows, corner turrets, and pale stone walls. As you approach from King’s Parade, stand back on the opposite side of the street to take in the full length of the building. The chapel may belong to King’s College, but in scale and grandeur it feels almost cathedral-like.

Founded by Henry VI in 1441 and completed in 1515 under Henry VIII, the chapel was built as the place of worship for King’s College. Its exterior is easily distinguished by its long, rectangular form, soaring buttresses, and huge stained-glass windows set between vertical stone tracery. From the college grounds or from the Backs, turn toward the River Cam for one of the finest views: the chapel seen across the lawns, framed by the river and nearby college buildings.

Inside, look upward first. The chapel’s magnificent fan-vaulted ceiling is its most celebrated feature, spreading across the roof like carved stone lace. This is one of the finest achievements of late Gothic English architecture and is worth lingering over before exploring the rest of the interior.

Next, look along the side walls and toward the east end to admire the 16th-century stained-glass windows. These tall panels fill the chapel with colored light and depict biblical scenes in remarkable detail. They are among the most important surviving Renaissance-era windows in England.

At the far end, notice the richly carved wooden screen and organ, which divide the chapel space and add a warmer Renaissance note to the stone interior. The chapel is also famous for its acoustics and for the Choir of King’s College, one of the best-known choirs in the world.

If possible, attend Evensong, usually held in the late afternoon. It offers a chance to experience the chapel as it was intended: not just as a monument, but as a living place of worship filled with music, atmosphere, and history.
