Knesset (Parliament) Building, Jerusalem

The Israeli parliament, known as the Knesset, is housed in an unassuming cubic building that stands in contrast to many grand governmental structures. Designed by architect Joseph Klarwein and inaugurated in 1958, the structure's simplicity and human scale reflect a departure from the pomp and authoritarianism often associated with government seats.

Funded by a bequest from Baron James de Rothschild, the building features a symbolic seven-branched menorah at the entrance, donated by the British parliament. Inside, visitors can admire the vibrant tapestries and mosaics created by renowned artist Marc Chagall, depicting scenes such as God's creation of the world, the Exodus from Egypt, and Jerusalem.

To explore the Knesset, visitors must join a guided tour, as unaccompanied entry is not permitted. These tours offer insights into the workings of the parliament, its artwork, architecture, and sometimes include a combined tour with the nearby Supreme Court. Additionally, the Knesset Archaeology Park tour explores findings from the Second Temple period through the Ottoman period.

For individual visitors, reservations are not required, but it's advisable to arrive at least 30 minutes before the free tour starts to undergo security screening. Remember to bring your passport for admission.
