State Bank of Pakistan Museum & Art Gallery, Karachi
The State Bank of Pakistan Museum & Art Gallery was established in 2004 with the aim of introducing Pakistan's first Monetary Museum. Housed in a historic Greco Roman building constructed in the 1920s by the British government, the museum was adapted from the former Imperial Bank of India. The project, initiated in 2006, focused on the conservation of the building and the acquisition of its collections.
The museum's Coins Gallery offers insights into the techniques of coin making, featuring original dies from the Pakistan Mint, old machines, tools, and a documentary covering the entire coin minting process. Divided into two sections, the Pre-Islamic Gallery traces the evolution of coinage from the barter system to the present day, showcasing a variety of coins including those used by the Indus Valley people, punch-marked coins from the 6th century B.C., and unique specimens from various historical periods such as Indo-Greeks, Indo-Scythians, and Hindu Shahis.
The Islamic Gallery exhibits coinage from the Arab Governors of Sindh to the modern era, highlighting Sultanate coins, Mughal coins, British Indian currency, and post-1947 coinage. The Currency Gallery provides an overview of the evolution of paper currency in the subcontinent, from early paper issues to polymer banknotes. It houses a collection of historical and current banknotes from Pakistan as well as polymer banknotes from around the world.
