Le Mayeur Museum, Denpasar
Le Mayeur Museum is a museum dedicated to the life and work of Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres, a painter from Brussels. The museum is located right on the beachfront and consists of buildings designed in traditional Balinese style. Inside, there are more than eighty artworks divided into five collections, featuring different materials like hardboard, plywood, canvas, and paper.
Le Mayeur's paintings often depict bare-breasted women, and his inspiration came from various places around the world, not just Bali. He traveled extensively through Europe, Africa, India, Italy, and France, especially during the 1920s. Le Mayeur came to Bali in 1932, intending it to be a short visit, but he decided to stay after meeting his muse, who later became his wife. He built their home in what was then a quiet fishing village. The museum also includes a meeting pavilion in the garden, where Le Mayeur used to welcome guests and potential art buyers.
