Sanur Beach, Denpasar
Sanur Beach is one of Bali’s early centres of modern tourism, predating the island’s livelier resort areas. Its rise was closely tied to Bali Beach Hotel, opened in 1966 as one of Bali’s first large international hotels. The building became known for exceeding the later 15-metre height limit, often described as the height of a coconut tree. Local stories also surround Room 327, said to have survived a major 1993 fire and now preserved as a sacred space linked with Nyai Loro Kidul, the Queen of the Southern Sea.
The beach itself is known for calm lagoon-like water, offshore reefs, traditional outrigger boats, and long sunrise views. Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, is often credited with calling Bali the “Morning of the World” after seeing the dawn at Sanur in the 1950s. With calm waters and a slower rhythm than Bali’s surf-heavy beaches, the shoreline suits walking, swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, or watching the early light over the sea.
Sanur’s cultural layers reach beyond the beach. The nearby Blanjong Inscription, dated to 914 AD, is one of Bali’s oldest written records. In the 1930s, Sanur drew foreign artists, while the northern end now holds Taman Festival, an abandoned late-1990s theme park with overgrown ruins and graffiti.
