Sindhu Beach, Denpasar

Sindhu Beach is one of Sanur’s calmer coastal areas, closely linked with the phrase “Morning of the World.” At sunrise, light spreads across the water, jukung boats rest on the sand, and Mount Agung sometimes appears in the distance. Local belief adds a spiritual layer, with the shore said to be protected by a sea goddess. Canang sari offerings are often placed on the sand and boat prows to bless fishermen before they go out to sea.

The beach still carries signs of everyday coastal life. Many jukung boats have painted eyes on their bows, a Balinese tradition meant to help them “see” through the water and avoid reefs, darkness, or unseen forces. The offshore reef keeps the waves gentle, while the pale sand reflects more recent tourism changes, when parts of the older volcanic shoreline were topped with softer golden sand.

Sindhu Beach also has a wider historical role. In the 1950s, early hotels helped make Sanur one of Bali’s first resort areas. The coast also had a darker past: Dutch troops landed nearby in 1906, and Japanese forces arrived in 1942. Today, this history sits alongside the turtle conservation centre and Pasar Sindhu, known for martabak manis, a thick sweet pancake, and sate ayam, grilled chicken skewers with peanut sauce.
