Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, Liverpool

The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, better known as LIPA, is one of the UK's leading institutions for studying theatre, music, and dance. It is housed in a restored historic building in Liverpool, which has a particularly interesting connection to The Beatles. This was once the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys, where Paul McCartney studied.

After the school closed in 1985, McCartney teamed up with Mark Featherstone-Witty, the founder of London's BRIT School, to give the building a new purpose. They acquired the site in 1990 and oversaw a £20-million redevelopment. The result was LIPA, officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1996.

One of the interesting things about LIPA is how it combines its historic architecture with modern facilities for performing arts education. Behind the building's impressive façade are rehearsal spaces, studios, and teaching facilities designed for the next generation of performers and creative professionals.

LIPA offers a wide range of courses, covering everything from acting and dance to music, sound technology, and production. Alongside its undergraduate and postgraduate programs, it also provides foundation courses and opportunities for younger performers through its LIPA 4-19 academies. These academies have expanded beyond Liverpool, with branches elsewhere in the UK and overseas, including Sofia, Bulgaria.

LIPA's educational work has extended beyond higher education, too. In 2014, it established a primary free school, followed by a sixth-form college in 2016. Both attracted considerable interest, reflecting the demand for creative education in Liverpool.

Today, LIPA remains an important part of the city's cultural life. And for Beatles fans, there's something especially fitting about the fact that Paul McCartney's former school has become a place where new generations of musicians, actors, dancers, and other creative talents can develop their skills.
