Lough Park, Cork

Lough Park surrounds a shallow, spring-fed freshwater limestone lake covering about four hectares. An inner path follows the water’s edge, while an outer route crosses the surrounding lawns and trees, forming a loop of roughly one kilometre. The lake was declared a Public Wildlife Refuge in 1881, making it one of Ireland’s oldest protected areas.

The Lough is especially known for birdlife. Mute swans, coots, mallards, moorhens and greylag geese are common, while winter can bring little egrets and nationally important numbers of shovelers. A willow-covered island provides a sheltered breeding and roosting site. The surrounding trees also support bats, including Leisler’s, brown long-eared and Daubenton’s bats; the latter can often be seen flying low over the water while hunting insects.

Local folklore gives the lake a more mysterious origin. According to the legend of King Corc, a hidden spring beneath his kingdom overflowed after his daughter Fíoruisce fell into it while carrying a golden vessel, flooding the valley and creating the lake. Beneath the surface, the Lough is also a major carp fishery, while model-boat activities continue a long recreational connection with the water.
