Louis Jacques Brunet Museum of Natural History, Recife
The Louis Jacques Brunet Museum of Natural History was founded in 1855 by French naturalist Louis Jacques Brunet. Established as a school museum, it served as a teaching collection combining scientific study with education. It remains one of the oldest natural history museums in the country and the only 19th-century example still operating in Pernambuco, although some sources mention 1858 as an alternative founding date.
The museum is housed within the historic Ginásio Pernambucano, an important educational institution with long academic traditions. This setting reflects the museum’s role as both a display space and a learning resource. Its interior has been adapted to preserve collections, present exhibitions, and support teaching, maintaining its connection to science education.
The collection includes around 5,000 to 7,000 items covering zoology, botany, geology, mineralogy, and archaeology. Visitors can see preserved animals, fossils, and mineral samples displayed in traditional glass and wood cases. Notable specimens include a giant alligator, an Amazonian pirarucu, and fossils from the Chapada do Araripe, illustrating both regional biodiversity and long-standing scientific practices.
