Palácio da Justiça (Palace of Justice), Recife

Palácio da Justiça (Palace of Justice), Recife

The Palácio da Justiça (Palace of Justice) is a historic building connected to the judicial system of Pernambuco. Construction began in the early 20th century, and it opened in 1930 as the headquarters of the state’s courts. Its design reflects formal public architecture, combining function with symbols of authority. A key feature is its central dome, about 45 meters high, though slightly lower than originally planned.

The building follows a neoclassical style, with a balanced façade marked by columns, decorative reliefs, and sculptural details related to themes of law and justice. A broad staircase leads to the main entrance, reinforcing its formal layout. It stands within a landscaped square, where open green areas and nearby civic buildings create a structured public setting that reflects its administrative role.

Inside, the palace includes courtrooms, offices, and ceremonial halls. High ceilings, marble finishes, and detailed moldings define the interiors. The building also contains works by Murillo La Greca, including Os Últimos Fanáticos de Canudos, now restored and returned to the Cabinet of the Presidency.
