Manila Bay, Manila

Manila Bay, Manila

Manila Bay, a significant natural harbor in the Philippines, plays a crucial role in the socio-economic growth of the region by serving as the Port of Manila. This strategic location has been vital in facilitating trade within the Philippines and neighboring countries since before the Spanish occupation. Covering an area of 1,994 square kilometers (769.9 square miles) with a coastline stretching 190 kilometers (118.1 miles), Manila Bay is situated in the western part of Luzon and is surrounded by Cavite and Metro Manila to the east, Bulacan and Pampanga to the north, and Bataan to the west and northwest.

The entrance to Manila Bay is divided by the islands of Corregidor and Caballo into two channels, with Corregidor playing a strategic role and being known for its historical significance. Other islands such as El Fraile and Carabao Island are present, with El Fraile hosting the remains of Fort Drum, a significant island fortress built by the United States Army.

The landscape surrounding the bay is characterized by volcanic peaks and lush tropical foliage, with the Bataan Peninsula to the north and Cavite to the south, contributing to its natural beauty and strategic importance.

Manila Bay's harbors, North and South, are busy with maritime activities. The North Harbor is dedicated to inter-island shipping, while the South Harbor accommodates large ocean-going vessels. This distinction underscores the bay's role in both local and international maritime operations, emphasizing its significance as a trade and commerce hub in the region.

Intramuros, Manila’s old walled Spanish town, stood for 350 years before World War II came, and still houses many of the historic buildings.
