Manila Cathedral, Manila (must see)

The Manila Cathedral, officially the Minor Basilica and Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, has stood at the center of Intramuros since 1571 and serves as the spiritual center of the Archdiocese of Manila. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who is also the patroness of the city, it is the seat of the Archbishop of Manila and one of the most significant Roman Catholic churches in the Philippines.

The cathedral's history has been marked by repeated destruction and renewal. Since the first church was established on the site, the building has been destroyed several times by fires, powerful earthquakes, and the devastation of the Second World War. The present cathedral, completed in 1958, is the eighth structure to occupy the site. Designed in a graceful Romanesque Revival style, it features an impressive façade, a large rose window, and beautifully sculpted bronze doors illustrating scenes from Philippine church history.

Inside, visitors are greeted by a spacious and serene interior adorned with colorful stained-glass windows, vaulted ceilings, marble floors, ornate altars, and finely crafted religious sculptures. The cathedral is also home to one of the largest pipe organs in the Philippines, which enriches liturgical celebrations and special concerts.

Throughout its history, the cathedral has hosted major religious and national events and has welcomed several popes, including Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul II, and Pope Francis. Located close to Rome Square, Fort Santiago, and Saint Augustine Church, it forms an essential stop on any visit to Intramuros, offering a memorable insight into the religious, architectural, and cultural legacy of Manila.
