Margaret Mahy Playground, Christchurch (must see)

Margaret Mahy Playground is one of central Christchurch’s most popular family spaces. It opened in 2015 as part of the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan. It is widely described as one of the largest playgrounds in the Southern Hemisphere, and the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects identifies it as the largest play project in New Zealand.

The playground is named after Margaret Mahy, the celebrated New Zealand children’s author, whose stories are remembered for their imagination, humor, and adventurous spirit. That literary connection is built into the design: the site includes a 130-meter “story arc” pathway, using elements inspired by Mahy, fellow Christchurch writer Elsie Locke, and Ngāi Tahu narratives and imagery.

The 2.5-hectare site includes climbing structures, slides, in-ground trampolines, flying foxes, water play, swings, towers, climbing nets, custom equipment, public art, and space for different ages and energy levels. Some of the larger features were designed to give children a sense of challenge and adventure, including high climbing towers, wide slides, rope structures, and areas where water, sand, and movement become part of the play. Food carts, seating, picnic areas, barbecues, and open riverside surroundings make it useful for adults as well as children.

Margaret Mahy Playground matters because it brought everyday life back into a part of Christchurch reshaped by the 2011 earthquake. The site sits within an area that was cleared and reimagined during the central city rebuild, and its design reflects the idea that a recovering city needs joy, noise, and family life as much as offices, shops, and monuments. Today, the playground also works as a social meeting place, not just a tourist attraction. It draws local families, school groups, visitors, and people walking between the river, New Regent Street, and other central landmarks.
