Iglesia de San Roque (Church of San Roque), Cordoba
Iglesia de San Roque has deep roots in early colonial health and religious history. The first project for a hermitage on this site dates to 1615, during a severe plague outbreak. It was dedicated to Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian, both traditionally invoked as protectors against disease. Later, the church became part of a wider charitable complex with the Hospital de la Asunción y San Roque, one of the first major public health institutions in the area.
The present church reflects a sober classical design with Tuscan-style elements, visible in its clean geometry and balanced façade. Inside, visitors can see a carved wooden pulpit with mestizo influence, decorated with golden floral motifs on a red background. The church also preserves a chased silver tabernacle and a historic colonial pipe organ.
Its history also includes an unusual system of ownership and care. Bishop Diego Salguero y Cabrera funded the church and hospital through a foundation supported by rural estates such as Olaen and Ayampitín. The Bethlehemite Brothers later managed the complex, caring for the sick. In 1941, the church and remaining hospital wings were declared a National Historic Monument.
