Mita Hachiman Jinja, Tokyo

Mita Hachiman Jinja is a Shinto shrine located in Minato, Tokyo, at Mita 3-7-16. Like other shrines, it features a festival on August 15 and includes a Kaguraden for religious performances, a Chōzuya for purification, and a Shamusho or office. Visitors can access it via a staircase, and it hosts two smaller shrines, Gokō Inari Jinja and Mikage Jinja, within its 2975.9 square meter area.

Together with Hieda Jinja, Rokugo Jinja, and Unoki Hachiman Jinja in Ōta-ku, Mita Hachiman Jinja is proposed as one possible location for the ancient Hiei Jinja from the historical Engi-shiki texts. Originally founded in August 709 to honor the deity protecting eastern Japan, the shrine was moved in 1011 to serve the Watanabe clan, under Emperor Saga's rule. Known locally as Tsuna Hachiman, the shrine is associated with the Watanabe clan's founder, who served the notable Yorimitsu Mimamoto.

The current shrine began construction in 1619 and finished in 1628, only to be rebuilt in 1672 after a fire. It was renamed Hiei Jinja in 1869, reverted to Mita Hachiman Jinja in 1874, and classified as a Gōsha, a district-level shrine. After the 1945 bombings destroyed it, the shrine was restored and reopened in 1954.
