Monumento a Colleoni (Equestrian monument to Colleoni), Venice

The sculptural landscape in Renaissance Venice was shaped by a society that held a deep aversion to excessive glorification of individuals and by the unique constraints of the city itself. As a result, the prominent presence of large-scale freestanding sculptures, which were common in other parts of Italy, was notably absent. However, there was one remarkable exception that defied this trend – the monument to Colleoni, created by the Florentine artist Andrea del Verrocchio, renowned sculptor, painter, and teacher of Leonardo da Vinci.

Verrocchio's final commission, the statue, stands as one of the most exquisite examples of Renaissance equestrian sculpture. Located in a charming square near the Great School of Saint Mark ("Scuola Grande di San Marco"), it was erected to fulfill the condottiero's request prior to his death in 1475. Colleoni, who had served as the lifelong captain-general and led successful military campaigns for the Venetian Republic against neighboring city-states for over four decades, bequeathed a significant portion of his estate to Venice. Among his stipulations was the construction of a bronze equestrian monument in his honor, initially intended for the Saint Mark's Square. However, the Venetian Senate, while honoring his wishes, opted to place the statue near the Great School of Saint Mark instead.
