Moschebrunnen (Sparrow Fountain), Aachen
Moschebrunnen, also known as the Sparrow Fountain, stands on a site where a water source has existed since the Middle Ages. Records from 1257 already mention a well or fountain here. In earlier centuries, it formed part of a network of public running fountains fed by springs and the Pau river. These fountains supplied water for households, crafts, and small workshops and were an essential part of daily life before modern plumbing.
The name comes from the local dialect, Öcher Platt, where Mösch (plural Mösche) means sparrow. This explains the direct link to birds rather than a symbolic meaning. While the location itself is medieval, the current fountain is a modern design created in 1978 by sculptor Bonifatius Stirnberg. It consists of a stone column topped by a large bronze sparrow, with smaller bird figures placed around it.
Interaction is a key feature of Stirnberg’s work, with sparrows that have movable parts and invite gentle contact. Unlike many historic fountains, it still provides drinking water, released at the press of a button. This keeps its long link to shared water use while also presenting it as late 20th-century public art.
