Musée de la Monnaie de Bank Al-Maghrib (Bank Al-Maghrib Currency Museum), Rabat

The Bank Al-Maghrib Currency Museum, located in Rabat, offers an insightful journey through Morocco’s rich monetary and artistic history. Established in 1992 and later inaugurated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI on June 19, 2002, the museum is housed on the third floor of the Bank Al-Maghrib, Morocco’s central bank founded in 1959. The bank itself stands as a remarkable example of modern architecture in the capital. Covering over 2,000 square meters across three floors, the museum is dedicated to showcasing the evolution of Moroccan currency, the history of the central bank, and a significant art collection.

The Currency History Trail section presents a vast numismatic collection featuring over 30,000 coins, banknotes, objects, and monetary instruments, tracing the history of Moroccan currency from antiquity to the present day. Displayed in a chronological sequence, this exhibition explores the different civilizations that have influenced Morocco’s monetary system, providing a detailed fresco of economic and financial heritage.

The museum also boasts a permanent art collection with more than 800 works of art, showcasing paintings from both Moroccan and foreign artists. The collection features orientalist depictions of Morocco, classical interpretations, and modern Moroccan painting, offering a comprehensive perspective on the country’s artistic development. Visitors can admire around eighty works on permanent display, reflecting the evolution of artistic expression in Morocco.

The Business Area section narrates the historical development of Bank Al-Maghrib and highlights its fundamental missions and role in the national economy. Visitors gain insight into the bank’s financial and monetary responsibilities and its influence on Morocco’s economic landscape over the past five decades.

In 2009, as part of the fiftieth anniversary of Bank Al-Maghrib, a new scenographic project was introduced, incorporating modern museographic techniques to enhance the visitor experience. Today, the Bank Al-Maghrib Currency Museum stands as a leading institution preserving and exhibiting Morocco’s financial and artistic legacy, making it an essential stop for history enthusiasts and art lovers alike.
